The first congregation was Ohabei Shalom was organized in the late 1840s That was Mostly in the south end. From 1880 to 1920 eastern european jews swelled into the north end similar to the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Other immigrant enclaves existed in west end and south end. Most of it got razed and the little remains to bring out the history of jewish life
