A recent count of the Jewish population in the greater Philadelphia region, counted more than 200,000.
Jewish settlement dates back to 1737. Communal life can be traced back to 1740, when a grant of ground was securred for Jewish burial on Spruce street between eighth and ninth streets. The earlies document of a Jewish Congregation - Mikveh Israel - is from 1773.

answering a letter of congratulations sent to him in 1790 by Philadelphia's Manuel Josephson on behalf of Mikveh Israel and its sister congregations of New York City, Charleston, and Richmond, also recognized that
"the liberal sentiment toward each other which marks every political and religious denomination of men in this
country stands unparalleled in the history of Nations."
In 1802 an Ashkenazi Congregation - ROdeph Shalom was formed.
