CITY INTRO

Jews are part of San Francisco since the days of the gold rush in the 1840s. In 1906 an earthquake and a fire destroyed most of the city and little remains from that earlier period. Many of these early pioneers were successful in business. In later generations the extensive philanthropy of these first families – Fleishhacker, Haas, Koshland, Stern, Steinhardt, Dinkelspiel, Zellerbach and others – made their names well-known in Northern California. The House of Love and Prayer founded by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, drew many spiritually minded young Jews.

Jewish Geography

Approximately 50,000 Jews live in the city. One of the orthodox Jewish neighborhoods are the Richmond District and the Sunset District. Also known as the avenues- http://wikitravel.org/en/San_Francisco/The_Avenues
